Series Introduction

Welcome to the next evolution of the "Meet Me In..." research series. The goal of the series has always been to educate, create awareness, and highlight key facts about where, how and why the physical networks that make up the world's information infrastructure meet.

Los Angeles

Then

The original series featured 1 Wilshire Blvd (a.k.a 624 South Grand) the King of Carrier Hotels and network interconnection in Los Angeles (and the West Coast of the United States at the time) and, as per the data, still reigning champion in Los Angeles today. Back then, in 2003, were the days of networks measured by a physical presence alone and not ASN’s on an IX. 1 Wilshire had 144 physical networks at the time and the Any2West IX did not yet exist. The Palo Alto Internet Exchange (PAIX) was listed as a “network” on the original published list though.

Now

Once again, and as the research data will prove continually, networks go to where networks already are and the same holds true for IX’s. As of this publishing, Any2West IX at CoreSite now has 275 ASN’s alone. The PAIX was acquired by Switch and Data and ultimately Equinix, but no longer appears at 1 Wilshire. In the markets where IX’s have been established they have done so in the same locations featured in the original research performed 18 years ago. The overall L.A. interconnection scene continues to be very robust.

LIVE SUMMARY

EDITORIAL COMMENTARY

July 15, 2022

Currently there are 9 IX’s in 12 facilities within 11 addresses in Los Angeles. The largest, Any2West, has 275 ASN’s and the smallest, Global Peer Exchange, has 1 ASN published. The difference between the largest IX and 2nd largest, NetIX at 98 (located at Equinix, CoreSite, and Digital Realty), is 177. That is a large delta making Any2West the clearly dominant IX in L.A. These numbers change as networks move on and off of IX’s, but the general direction is typically up.

The Top 5 Networks, by number of IX’s connected to, are Google, CloudFlare, Edgecast, Microsoft and Facebook.

The data tables below display live data on all IXs in the region outlined in this map image.

Los Angeles - Networks by Internet Exchange

Networks (ASN’s) are listed as “accessible” via an IX. Accessibility is on a VLAN basis. This does not imply that the networks are physically present in the Facility. To know if a network accessible on an IX is also physically present in the same Facility as the IX, see the "AS Network Accessibility by Facility" table below this table.
