Series Introduction

Welcome to the next evolution of the "Meet Me In..." research series. The goal of the series has always been to educate, create awareness, and highlight key facts about where, how and why the physical networks that make up the world's information infrastructure meet.

Miami

Then

The original series featured LayerOne at 36 NE 2nd St and the NAP of the Americas. Both buildings stand today as the Numbers 1 & 2 in the market with the NAP being the Number 1 site today. Since there was no building Meet Me Room within 36 NE 2nd St at the time (an issue Hunter Newby helped resolve with telx in 2007), the LayerOne facility was the highlighted neutral interconnection point in the building. Interestingly, LayerOne was acquired by Switch and Data in 2005, and then Switch and Data was ultimately acquired by Equinix. It is very important to point out with this particular market’s research that the NAP in Miami was the first facility originally featured that had an Internet Exchange at the center of its interconnection business model, as noted in the 2003 article. A nod to Josh Snowhorn and David Diaz - pioneers in the Miami IX market development.

Now

36 NE 2nd St is now owned by Digital Realty Trust, which also owns the former telx Meet Me Room. Equinix acquired and now owns the NAP, but is also a tenant at 36 NE 2nd St. Between the two, the NAP is larger not only by total square feet, but also by number of IX’s present with 7. 36 NE 2nd has 3 IX’s present, within 5 different facilities within the building.

Miami Internet Exchanges

LIVE SUMMARY

EDITORIAL COMMENTARY

June 8, 2023

Miami now has 7 Internet Exchanges listed as accessible from the Equinix NAP. The largest, Equinix Miami, has 172 ASN’s and the smallest with any networks present, BBIX Miami, has 1. The difference between the largest and 2nd largest, FL-IX with 153 ASN’s, is 19, making the number 2 IX in the market fairly comparable to the top IX.

The Top 5 Networks, by number of IX’s connected to, are Cloudflare and Riot Games with 4, AkamaiYahoo! and PCH with 3. A special mention to Hurricane Electric and many others for being connected to 3 IX’s in the market as well.

The data tables below display live data on all IXs in the region outlined in this map image.

Miami - Networks by Internet Exchange

Networks (ASN’s) are listed as “accessible” via an IX. Accessibility is on a VLAN basis. This does not imply that the networks are physically present in the Facility. To know if a network accessible on an IX is also physically present in the same Facility as the IX, see the "AS Network Accessibility by Facility" table below this table.
